5 Japanese Business Etiquette Rules Every Learner Should Know

Planning to work in Japan? These cultural norms will help you navigate professional relationships with confidence.

01 · Essay

Speaking Japanese is only half the battle when working with Japanese companies — cultural fluency matters just as much.

011. Master the bow

Different bow angles signal different levels of respect. A 15° bow is casual, 30° is standard for business, and 45° expresses deep apology or gratitude.

022. Exchange business cards properly

Receive meishi (business cards) with both hands, study them carefully, and place them on the table during the meeting — never in your pocket immediately.

033. Use Keigo correctly

Honorific (尊敬語) and humble (謙譲語) language is essential for business contexts. Mistakes here can damage relationships.

044. Punctuality is non-negotiable

In Japanese business culture, "on time" means 5–10 minutes early.

055. Listen more than you speak

Japanese business meetings often involve long silences. Resist the urge to fill them — silence is part of the conversation.
