Understanding て-form: The Most Important Grammar Pattern in Japanese

The て-form is the gateway to intermediate Japanese. Learn the conjugation rules, common uses, and practice exercises.

01 · Essay

The て-form is one of the most versatile tools in Japanese grammar. Master it, and a huge range of intermediate patterns suddenly opens up to you.

01What is the て-form?

The て-form (te-form) is a non-final verb form used to connect actions, request things, describe ongoing states, and much more.

02Conjugation rules

For る-verbs, simply replace る with て: 食べる → 食べて.

For う-verbs, the rules depend on the final kana — but the patterns are predictable once you practice them.

03Common uses

  1. Connecting actions: 朝起きて、ご飯を食べます
  2. Polite requests: 待ってください
  3. Continuous tense: 勉強しています
  4. Permission: 入ってもいいですか
